The 43rd Carnival of Heep En Secondary School: The embodiment and model of holistic education-SEEDINO brand sponsorship

In this rapidly changing society, the significance of education extends far beyond the transmission of knowledge; it lies in cultivating students' character, skills, and sense of social responsibility. SEEDINO is honored to sponsor the 43rd Annual Carnival at Heep Yunn Secondary School. This event is not only a grand gathering but also a concrete manifestation of Heep Yunn Secondary School's holistic education philosophy.

The 43rd Annual Carnival of Heep Yunn Secondary School, a testament to and model of holistic education, was successfully held on the 19th of this month.

Heep Yunn School The Carnival aims to raise funds for the Heep Yunn School Education Fund. It's a day for students to showcase their creativity and amaze all guests with their wonderful booths and game designs. More importantly, it's a time for Heep Yunn alumni to reunite, returning to campus to support their younger schoolmates.

Background of Heep Yunn Secondary School Carnival

Heep Yunn's "Games and Recreation Day" is often written as "Games and Recreation Day," leading people to believe that it is just a day for booth games where the school is open to the public for "playing around." In fact, "games and recreation" is already included in Heep Yunn's school song. The line "Jude Fuyouyi Xiqiuxuexinyin" is taken from the Analects of Confucius, "The Master said: 'Set your mind on the Way, base yourself on virtue, rely on benevolence, and roam in the arts.'" It means that students should set lofty ideals, cultivate noble character, have a kind and loving heart, cultivate elegant sentiments, and master various skills.

In the past, talent cultivation relied on the Six Arts, allowing students to immerse themselves in these arts: rites, music, archery, charioteering, calligraphy, and mathematics. While the content of modern education has changed, it still revolves around cultivating students' moral, intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic, and spiritual development. Through the annual "Entertainment Festival," teachers and students at Hsieh En University work together to personally experience what "holistic education" truly means.

Upholding the philosophy of holistic education, Heep Yunn Secondary School established its annual recreational activities as early as the 1980s, held on the third Sunday of January each year. The aim is to raise funds for the "Heep Yunn Education Fund" under the Heep Yunn School Board, which is used to improve school facilities and support students with financial needs to participate in various learning activities. The school deeply hopes that regardless of their family background, students can equally benefit from quality Christian education and share in God's grace.

In the past, the amusement fair was transformed into a "small amusement fair" twice due to the pandemic and social conditions, and was not open to the public. Excluding the three years of the pandemic, the amusement fair has now been around forty-three years. From building "clothing bamboo" to constructing "angle iron frame", it has experienced all the changes in society.

Each year, apart from Form Six students preparing for the Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (DSE), students from Forms 1 to 5 are required to prepare a game booth for their class. From setting the theme, designing games, collecting gifts, transporting supplies, and building the booth, to promotion, scheduling, and more, everything is handled by the students themselves. This allows them to step out of their comfort zones and connect with each other in the post-pandemic era. Even when the process is challenging, teachers and students always work together, encouraging each other and overcoming difficulties together, to create uniquely designed booths. This also allows students to learn to interact with external organizations and the public in a humble, friendly, and respectful manner.

With the changing times, today's Carnival incorporates new elements such as technology and environmental protection. In conjunction with the teaching and practice of visual arts and integrated with the school-based "Science and Technology" curriculum, students apply various scientific and engineering concepts and technologies to create diverse and aesthetically pleasing designs that are both dynamic and engaging. By God's grace, the school hopes that the Carnival will not only keep pace with the times, continuing to equip students with diverse knowledge and skills, but also carry on the traditional spirit and values of Heung Yung, responding to the different needs of a changing world.

Besides passing on skills and nurturing well-rounded students, the annual recreational fair is also an important day for alumni and friends of Heep Yunn to "come home." After many years apart, Heep Yunn members can gather together to reminisce about the past and witness the various developments of Heep Yunn under God's grace. May the bond of friendship among Heep Yunn members in Christ remain unchanged even as times change, and may God's blessings and protection ensure that Heep Yunn's annual recreational fair continues to be a blessing for the school, the community, and future generations.

Introduction to Heep Yunn Middle School

Heep Yunn School, located at 1 Farm Road, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong, was founded in 1936. It is a Direct Subsidy Scheme Girls' Secondary School under the Anglican Church of Hong Kong and one of the 22 member schools of the Hong Kong Subsidized Schools Council. Therefore, it is commonly referred to as one of the 22 "traditional prestigious schools" sponsored by the church in Hong Kong.

The earliest origins of Heep Yunn Secondary School can be traced back to 1886, when Ms. Margaret Johnstone, an Anglican missionary, founded Fairlea Girls' School, a Chinese-language school for girls. Ms. Johnstone rented a three-story building called "Fairlea" owned by Mr. R. Belilios, a prominent Jewish businessman. The school was located on the site of St. Paul's College on Bonham Road, and its purpose was to teach basic knowledge to the daughters of Chinese Christians.

In 1912, the school moved to 4-6 Babington Road because the church wanted to open a boarding school for St. John at the original site. Around 1918, St. Stephen's Girls' School's Caine Road campus was damaged by the Shantou earthquake, and the school moved to the Philip Babington Road campus, but the two schools continued to operate independently. In 1924, the two schools moved to 2 Lyttelton Road, and five years later, an east wing campus was added. At the same time, Philip Girls' School opened a secondary school section.

In 1936, by order of the Education Department and the Anglican Diocese, Fairfield Girls' School merged with another Anglican girls' school located in Sung Wong Toi: Victoria Home and Orphanage (also known as Victoria Girls' School, Victoria Girls' School and Orphanage, founded in 1887) to establish a new school. The school was located on Kowloon Farm Road to solve the problem of insufficient space for the development of the two schools; at the same time, all the orphans of the home were transferred to Tai Po Agricultural and Chemical Institute.

On October 23, 1936, then-Governor of Hong Kong, Sir John Hodge, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the new school on Farm Road. The school building was presented to the public by Bishop Mok Sau-tseng on May 19 of the following year, and opened the school the next day. The new school was named "Hsieh Grace"—meaning "two schools working together to witness to God's grace"; and the school motto further explains the meaning of the name: "Working together through grace, believing in the Lord and loving the community."

That's all for today's sharing. Feel free to email me with any questions or comments. See you next time, bye-bye!
